LAKEPORT, Calif. – The 1965 epic, “Dr. Zhivago,” screens on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport.

Show times are 1 and 6 p.m.

Winner of five Academy Awards, the film stars Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, and is set in Russia during the Bolshevik revolution and World War I.

British director David Lean made the film from Boris Pasternak’s book which was banned in Russia at the time of filming.

Sweeping cinematography and a compelling musical score bring life to the passionate but doomed romance between the high society doctor/poet of the film’s title and Lara, the beautiful daughter of a seamstress. Rated PG-13 for mature themes.

Entry to the film is by donation.

The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, www.soperreesetheatre.com

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Worldwide Healing Hands (WHH) is preparing for a one-week mission to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, where the organization will partner with Project Medishare for Haiti to provide women with cervical cancer screenings and treatment.

In addition, the WHH team will train medical staff in Haiti during the trip.

Dr. Paula Dhanda of Kelseyville will be joined in January by two other physicians, two nurses and a fifth-year Haitian medical student to conduct the screenings and treatment.

Cervical cancer cases number 94 per every 100,000 women in Haiti, giving Haiti the distinction of having the highest incident rate in the world. However, the cancer is preventable and treatable, said Dr. Dhanda.

“Haitian women do not receive even the most basic gynecologic care due to few resources and limited access to medical professionals trained in the screening and treatment methods. Pap smears are not available to women in these low-resource areas. Providing screening even once for a woman can save her life,” she said.

While conducting the screenings, WHH will provide training for at least two Haitian OB/GYNs and staff in the methods used to screen and treat a woman in a single visit.

Dr. Dhanda noted that WHH teaches the single visit approach so women, no matter where they live, can be screened and treated.

“This life-saving approach is vital; when a mother dies, her children are 10 times more likely to die within two years,” she said.

The Haiti mission in January is the most recent WHH project in which the nonprofit organization seeks to improve the quality of healthcare for women and children in underserved areas of the world.

Previous trips have included missions in Nepal, Chad and Haiti.

WHH partners with medical organizations around the world to provide compassionate medical and surgical care in a way that is respectful to the cultural beliefs of the women.

Medical personnel donate their time and expertise with a goal of training local physicians and midwives so that WHH’s work is sustainable.

The majority of funding for Worldwide Healing Hands is provided by donations.

SAN FRANCISCO – In the wake of President Obama’s recent executive actions on immigration, the State Bar of California advises consumers to be aware of scam artists who promise help related to immigration reform.

The executive actions protect certain groups from deportation, and are summarized online by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, http://www.uscis.gov/immigrationaction .

The government Web site warns that these initiatives have not yet been implemented, and USCIS is not accepting any requests or applications at this time.

“Beware of anyone who offers to help you submit an application or a request for any of these actions before they are available. You could become a victim of an immigration scam,” it warns.

Consistent with that warning – and still in effect – is California statute AB 1159, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, and approved last year by the California Legislature.

This state legislation:

– Increases the amount of bond that immigration consultants must carry from $50,000 to $100,000 as of July 1, 2014.
– Prohibits the use of the term “notario,” which has been misconstrued as someone who is qualified to give legal advice.
– Provides that a person who violates the ban on the use of the term “notario” is subject to a civil penalty of up to $1,000 per day for each violation.

State Bar President Craig Holden said the legislation “continues to aid in the State Bar's effort to protect immigrants from those who would seek to take advantage of their dreams of citizenship.”

For information about filing a complaint against a lawyer licensed in California, go to the State Bar’s Web site, www.calbar.ca.gov , or call 800-879-4532.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review for the U.S. Department of Justice also handles complaints against immigration attorneys who are licensed in any state.

Call 703-305-0470 or find the complaint form online, http://www.justice.gov/eoir/SubmitAComplaint.htm .

California Attorney General Kamala Harris also has issued a warning against scams targeting immigrants at http://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-kamala-d-harris-issues-consumer-alert-scams-targeting .
