MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Community members are asked to save the date for an event to benefit the Middletown High School junior class that will take place next month.

The 12th annual Wine and Chocolate event will be held beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Twin Pine Casino in Middletown.

Enjoy an evening of food pairing with local wines, delicious desserts and silent auction.

The cost is $25 per person.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – A steady stream of hungry customers arrived at the Kelseyville High School Student Center on Friday, Jan. 16, as the Lake County Association of Realtors (LCAOR) Scholarship Committee served up the first of their “Stress and worry-free dinner-to-go” series.

Overall, a total of 74 dinners were sold and enjoyed, raising approximately $1,720 toward the LCAOR Scholarship fund for Lake County high school seniors.

Making it even more of a success was the fact that of those 74 meals, at least 15 of the meals (which feed a family of four) were donated and delivered to needy families in Lake County.

“What is great about this dinner series is that we are able to give back to the community in two ways. The fundraiser is primarily about raising money to give to our local high school seniors, and secondarily some of the dinners were purchased and donated to local families in need – a double whammy,” said LCAOR Scholarship Committee Chair Heidi Johnson.

The committee wishes to recognize the following local businesses and businesspersons for donating a meal to a needy family: First American Title Co., Tri-Counties Inspections, Jacie Casteel of Sterling Mortgage, Kalyn Noble of Noble Realty, Christy Burris of Noble Realty, Irene Rivas of CPS County Air Properties, Jim Magliulo of CPS Country Air Properties, Sinda Knight, Sue Schlicher of City Center Real Estate, Mary Benson of Day Mortgage, Cassie Pivniska of Konocti Realty, Henrietta Bellone, North Bay Merchant Services and the Lake County Association of Realtors.

The LCAOR Scholarship Committee is now selling tickets for the next dinner-to-go, which will feature a delicious lasagna meal for four – available in meat, veggie and gluten-free options – along with Caesar salad and garlic bread, all for just $30. Add an order of homemade apple crisp for dessert for an additional $10.

Order by Jan. 30 and pick up on Friday, Feb. 6, between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the LCAOR Office in Lakeport, Noble Realty, Sterling Mortgage or ReMax Lake County.

Proceeds from the dessert orders will go directly back to the Kelseyville Unified School District (KUSD) Farm-to-School program, funding their school garden project and greenhouse.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – State income tax filing season is upon us, bringing with it an exciting opportunity for Lake County residents to help provide decent affordable housing for in-need families within our communities. 

A new law has been passed that includes Habitat for Humanity in the list of available organizations to donate to when tax payers file their California state returns. 

Habitat for Humanity is the only housing organization available for Californians to select from this program.

 Habitat for Humanity Lake County urges everyone who files a California state return to check the donation box on line 428 of their income tax return and donate as it will all for continued home-building projects within Lake County.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The holidays are always a great time to teach about giving back and helping those less fortunate.

This past season Ability Road took full advantage of this opportunity with their participants.

Ability Road is a unique vocational teaching program where skill instructors work with small teams of participants to develop customized goals with the eventual outcome of total independence.

On a normal day the participants would sharpen their skills with their instructors.

The participants were given the opportunity to give back, and they did wholeheartedly with Toys for Tots and Salvation Army. 

Each participant budgeted $20 to buy toys. In addition to making a difference in the life of another child, they were able to learn valuable things like working within a budget and counting back change.

Ability Road's unique approach to teaching vocational skills provides an environment where participants have fun while learning valuable skills and helping others all at the same time.

The ringing of a bell with a volunteer for Salvation Army is a sure sign of the holiday season. Each skill instructor and their team were eager to volunteer to ring and get donations.

One of the participants went a step further and rang the bell in honor of a family member.

Ability Road is paving a new way for teaching vocational skills and helping participants reach a productive and independent life.

EUREKA, Calif. – On Saturday, Jan. 24, Clear Lake Cardinal boy wrestlers headed north to compete at the North Coast Classic Wrestling Tournament in Eureka.

Julian Lewis (3-1 on the day) pinned his way to the 220 pound finals.

During the finals championship match, he lost a close battle 3-1 to a nonsection wrestler to take home the silver medal.

Mark Estrada (120 pounds), Issac Lewis (152 pounds) and Tyler Buchholz (160 pounds) each went 1-2 on the day.

Also wrestling in the tournament was Jacob Caldwell, 145 pounds, and Dillon Williams, 170 pounds.

Also on Saturday, Cardinal girl wrestlers headed south to The Julie Gonzalez Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Vallejo.

Emily Psalmonds (2-2 on the day) placed third at 111 pounds in a round robin bracket, with her only losses coming against nonsection wrestlers.

Also wrestling in the tournament was Mariela Soto at 101 pounds.
