LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The North Coast Opportunities Volunteer Network is offering free tax return preparation services to qualifying households.

Those with annual household incomes below $53,000 in Lake and Mendocino counties are eligible for the program.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – March for Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, and the Middletown Senior Center plans its annual event on Saturday, March 28.

There will be a fundraiser one-mile walk starting at 11 a.m., an indoor craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus hamburgers, hot dogs and nachos available from noon to 1 p.m.

Join them and help raise money and awareness for senior hunger.

All proceeds benefit the Meals on Wheels Program that delivers balanced nourishing meals each day to homebound seniors age 60 and above.

Middletown delivers more than 800 meals per month to housebound seniors in Hidden Valley, Middletown and Cobb, and the need continues to grow.

Although partial funding comes from the Area Agency on Aging and Redbud Healthcare District, subsidization from the community in the amount of about $28,000 per year is required to fully fund this expanding need. That’s why the Senior Center has fundraisers year-round.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Children's Council and the Lake County Office of Education will host the fifth annual Children's Festival and Advocacy Walk on Saturday, April 11.

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Library Park in downtown Lakeport.

There will be entertainment throughout the day, including music, crafts, activities, contests, resources and fun.

They also will mark together down the streets of Lakeport to demonstrate their commitment to keeping children safe and protected. Super hero costumes are optional but encouraged.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Lakeport Library and the Earle Baum Center of the Blind are collaborating to offer a free support group for people with low vision.

The low-vision support group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the library, located at 1425 N. High St.

Patricia Jefferson, a vision rehabilitation instructor at the Earle Baum Center, will conduct the support group and present training in low-vision aids, magnification devices, daily living skills management and techniques to support independence.

Jefferson invites the public to learn about the Earle Baum services and training and to bring their questions.

She said that this “is a really good partnership with the library and the Earle Baum Center.”

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – Redwood Community Services Inc. is pleased to announce the opening of the HOME program (Health Opportunities in Mothering Experiences) in Lower Lake.

HOME is a perinatal drug and alcohol outpatient treatment clinic designed to support the special needs of pregnant and mothering women in working toward recovery.

The HOME program is located at 16170 Main St. Suite F.

This program required many dedicated staff working long and hard to have the vision of HOME Perinatal Drug and Alcohol Program to be realized.

At HOME mothers struggling with substance abuse receive treatment, build community, and nurture opportunities to build connections with their children.

Groups and treatment hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

They currently are accepting referrals from community partners as well as self-referrals.

Redwood Community Services reported that this new service has been overwhelmingly well received within the community.

Since our opening we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community. Particularly from Craig at 2oday Furniture, who not only made a very generous donation of furniture, but also helped Redwood Community Services realize its vision of a warm, comfortable and inviting sanctuary for the women and families in the program.

Lake County has been without such a program for several years now, and Redwood Community Services is excited to expand its services to meet the needs of the community.

Various childcare items such as toys and cribs are still in need for this program and are a tax-deductible donation.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – More than 70 community volunteers from businesses and the community at large will take to the stage on April 18 and April 19th for the sixth annual Celebrity Who’s Who Lip Sync.

The Soper Reese Theater, 275 S. Main Street in Lakeport, is the venue for this two-hour musical celebration.

“Every year the audience states ‘this is the best show ever’ and the Lake County Chamber of Commerce expects nothing less this year,” said co-director Diana Schmidt.

The theme for this sixth annual Celebrity Who’s Who Lip Sync show is “Take a Walk on the Wild Side.”

All songs are about animals or by groups with the name of animals. Some of the 20 songs of this two-hour show will be “Stray Cat Strut,” “Muskrat Love,” “Eye of the Tiger” and “Beer for My Horses,” to name a few.

Performances will take place at 3 and 7 p.m. April 18 and 2 p.m. April 19.

Price of the tickets is $25 per person with a special senior price on Saturday for the 3 p.m. matinée of $20 per person.
