UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Archaeology professor Dr. John Parker will present a special program on Saturday, July 18, starting at 9 a.m. at the Rodman Preserve near Upper Lake for children attending the monthly nature education program there.

Dr. Parker will lead youngsters on a short walk where he will talk about what it was like to live on this land 1,000 years ago.

He will share artifacts with participants and discuss and demonstrate the importance of tules to the original inhabitants of this area.

Dr. Parker also will demonstrate how Native Americans used to chip obsidian and show how points and knives were made.

This program is free and open to the public, however reservations are encouraged as attendance will be limited to 15 children to allow for an enhanced experience.

The Rodman Preserve and nature education center is located at 6350 Westlake Road near Upper Lake.

Take the Nice-Lucerne Cut-off off of Highway 29, between Lakeport and Upper Lake, turn east onto the Nice-Lucerne Cut-off then left on to Westlake Road. The preserve entry is to the immediate right after turning on to Westlake.

The preserve is owned and operated by the Lake County Land Trust, which presents monthly children’s nature education program throughout the summer.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Bill Sullivan of Clearlake, was awarded “best overall” in the 15th annual Show and Shine Car Show, held July 4 during the Lakeshore Lions Club's 58th annual Redbud Parade and Festival.

Sullivan also received the “Sexy '60s” award with his 1966 Chevelle Super Sport hardtop.

The award for the “Best Low Rider” went to Cal Murillo of Clearlake and his 1967 Chevy Impala, while Linda Cunningham-McEwen of Hidden Valley Lake was awarded the trophy for “Best Euro/Import,” with her 1978 Fiat Spider.

“Best Boat” went to Steven Lowater, of Lower Lake and his 1975 Sanger Hydro.

Kyle Aarreberg of Clearlake received the award for “Best Motorcycle” with his 2008 Street Bob.

“Lions Choice” went to Tim Lohrey, of Rio Linda, and his 1932 Ford three-window coupe.

The “Lioness Choice” winner was James and Diane Tullos, of Lower Lake, who showed their 1951 Ford custom car.

Additional awards were presented as follows:

– “Roaring '20s”: TJ Hayness of Lakeport and his 1928 Ford Model pickup.
– “Pretty '30s”: Mickey Hindman of Kelseyville and his 1937 Ford coupe.
– “Fabulous '40s”: Jim Mallard of Lower Lake and his 1949 Mercury sedan.
– “Nifty '50s”: Dave and Kathy Lakatos of Kelseyville and their 1955 Chevy 210.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Westside Community Park Committee is calling for all interested grillers to compete in the sixth annual “Grillin’ on the Green” cook-off.

This year’s “Grillin’ on the Green” barbecue cook-off is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.

The event takes place at Westside Community Park, 1401 Westside Park Road.

The fundraiser features food, drink and entertainment for all ages.

Local organizations, individuals and professionals go head-to-head in the cook-off, preparing their best barbecue recipes for attendees who then cast Peoples’ Choice votes for the favorites.

New this year is the addition of three “celebrity” judges who will select their favorite griller. 

Michelle Malm, food services director for the Kelseyville Unified School District, Dave Faries, managing editor of the Lake County Record-Bee, and Michael Lunas, a Superior Court judge in real life, have agreed to put their “foodie” reputations on the line.

Sponsors of the event are sought and will be recognized at the Grillin’ on the Green event.

Levels of sponsor recognition are $100, $300, $500, $1,000, $3,000 and $5,000. The Keeling-Barnes Family Foundation will match sponsorships up to a total of $5000.

Westside Community Park is a city of Lakeport recreational facility that has been in development for 15 years.

The nonprofit park committee is developing the park in conjunction with the city of lakeport, volunteers, and numerous contributions by individuals and businesses dedicated to constructing a recreational facility for the youth and adults of Lake County.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – This Thursday, July 16, the Kelseyville Business Association will hold its second street dance of the season.

The event will feature the C.A.M. Band.

Music begins at 7 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. on Main Street.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The next free household hazardous waste dropoff event will be held Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18, at Quackenbrush Mountain Recovery & Compost Facility , 16520 Davis St. adjacent to the Landfill, Clearlake.

From Highway 53 turn on to 40th Avenue, take a left on Moss Avenue, follow the signs to the landfill on Davis Avenue.

Hours will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Households can bring up to 15 gallons of toxic items free of charge. Fees will be charged for amounts over 15 gallons.

Items that are accepted include paint, solvents, fuels, five-gallon propane tanks (empty), pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, fluorescent light tubes (up to 60 linear feet) and other toxic materials that cannot be put in the trash.

Items that cannot be accepted include televisions, computer monitors, ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials or infectious wastes.

Household hazardous waste dropoff services are provided to Lake County residential households by the Integrated Waste Management Division of the Lake County Public Services Department and the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

Businesses also are welcome to use this convenient service to properly dispose of hazardous waste and protect our environment, however, businesses must pay for this county-funded service and first make an appointment. Business appointments can be made by calling Lake County Waste Solutions at 707-234-6400.

Beginning in June, ask about receiving a free puncture-proof sharps container at one of these events to use for free sharps disposal.

Free recycling options for residents and businesses:

· Recycled paint is available to both residents and businesses at Lake County Waste Solutions and South Lake Refuse and Recycling Center first-come, first-served basis in five gallon containers. Colors include tan, brown, gray and pink.

· Used motor oil and cooking oil can be dropped off by businesses and residents, at Lake County Waste Solutions, South Lake Refuse & Recycling Center, and the North Shore Fire Protection District station at 6257 Seventh Ave. in Lucerne. Visit www.recycling.co.lake.ca.us for more locations.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – It’s not too late to become a vendor at the upcoming Hot August Nites Car Show & Concert, a benefit for the Lakeport Senior Activity Center.

The deadline for vendor sign up is July 31.

The third annual event will be celebrated from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Lakeport’s Library Park.

It features a free car, truck and motorcycle show plus free concert by local favorites LC Diamonds, promising a large turnout. 

“Fun, sun, music, food, entertainment, great vendors, raffle and a 50s costume contest should really bring out the crowds,” said senior center Director Jonathan Crooks.

“This is a great chance for the vendors to show off their specialties and share their ‘wares’ while supporting the Lakeport Senior Activity Center in the ongoing quest to help our local seniors,” said Gloria Doskocil, event volunteer.
