LAKEPORT, Calif. – Lake County Library director Christopher Veach invites the public to “come play with an Ipad, Galaxy Tab, Kindle Fire, and Nexus 7 tablet and learn how to download free ebooks from the Library!”

Library staff will conduct a free Technology Petting Zoo at Lakeport Library at 1425 N. High St. from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 28, to introduce people to an array of small electronic devices.

Patrons can try out the various devices in the library and can bring in their own devices to get help with them.

People can use their Lake County Library cards to borrow electronic books through the library’s website for free. Library staff will demonstrate how to download ebooks at the Technology Petting Zoos.”

Redbud Library in Clearlake will host a Technology Petting Zoo on April 25 and Middletown Library will host one on May 30. All Technology Petting Zoos will occur from 1 to 3 p.m.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around the North Coast during the coming week.

Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.

LAKE COUNTY
 
Highway 20
 
– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Bachelor Valley Road to Van Sleeper Road beginning Wednesday, March 25. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.
 
– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Burpee Drive to Bartlett Springs Road beginning Monday, March 23. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.
 
– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Long Valley Road to New Long Valley Road. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
 
Highway 175

– PG&E has been issued a Caltrans encroachment permit for utility repairs near Socrates Mine Road on Wednesday, March 25. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 9 a.m. to noon. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 1

– Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit to hold the annual Whale Run and Walk Race on Saturday, March 21, from 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Turns onto Laurel Avenue will be restricted. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.
 
– Electrical work from Blue Side Gulch to Abalone Street will continue through Friday, March 20. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.
 
Highway 101

– Caltrans will perform slide repairs near the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge (near Frog Woman Rock). Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.
 
– Pavement repairs from Reeves Canyon Road to Ridgewood Ranch Road will begin Friday, March 20. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. LC#C101AA
 
– Highway construction from Casteel Lane to the north Willits railroad crossing will continue through Friday, March 20. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

– PG&E has been issued a Caltrans encroachment permit for utility repairs near East Haehl Street beginning Thursday, March 26. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
 
Highway 271

– PG&E has been issued a Caltrans encroachment permit for utility repairs near Cummings on Wednesday, March 25. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
 
– PG&E has been issued a Caltrans encroachment permit for utility repairs near the Caltrans Leggett Maintenance yard beginning Wednesday, March 25. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
 
Caltrans advises motorists to drive with caution when approaching work areas and to be prepared to stop at traffic control stations.
 
The Caltrans Traffic Operations Office has reviewed each project and determined that individual project delays are expected to be less than the statewide policy maximum of 30 minutes, unless noted otherwise above.

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – Lower Lake High School's own Jenny Landeta, represented the county at the Poetry Out Loud State Competition on Sunday, March 15, and Monday, March 16, in Sacramento.

While at the competition Landeta received certificates of participation from Sen. Mike McGuire and Assemblyman Bill Dodd.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport Public Works Department reported that it will be carrying out road work on Second and Brush streets from March 23 to 26.

The work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Due to the work, Second Street between N. Brush and North Tunis streets and Brush Street between Second and Third streets will be closed, city officials reported.

There will be traffic control in the area.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and to drive with caution.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Department of Public Works (DPW) will soon be starting its annual roadside weed abatement program through the application of herbicides along certain county-maintained roads.

Should residents or property owners with frontage along the roads listed below desire that no weed abatement occur adjacent to their residence or property, they must contact DPW prior to March 30, 2015, unless a previous request for “no spray” was submitted to DPW.

If you would like to remove an existing “no spray” status, you must contact DPW at 707-263-2341.

As a reminder, property owners are responsible for maintaining their frontage in such a way that does not create nuisance conditions.

While property owners can request that their frontage not be sprayed, they must otherwise maintain their frontage to avoid creating a public nuisance that could be caused by overgrown weeds such as fire hazard, aesthetics, sight distances, etc.

To assist those property owners who object to spraying, DPW will review their proposed maintenance plans at no charge and issue a no-fee encroachment permit to perform the maintenance as necessary.

WILLITS, Calif. – On Tuesday, March 10, the Terrace Viking wrestlers headed off to their first tournament of the season, most with just a few practices under their belts.

Four boys and five girls made the trip to wrestle for Terrace.

The gym was packed to standing room only; it was nice to see so many wrestlers, coaches and family members out on a Tuesday evening to support middle school wrestling.

First place medalists were Sergio Rodriguez and Mavis Pyorre. Teagan Miller took home a second place medal in her first wrestling tournament.

Third place medals went to George Fred, along with first-time wrestlers, Will Green, Scarlett Ballard, Mia Depaz-Flores and Lupita Heredia.

Andrew Bain came up just short to miss out on a medal and Bryanna Johnson, who also is on the team, did not wrestle in the tournament. 

Sergio Rodriguez rolled through the tournament, pinning all of his opponents, on his way to the championship.

In her first wrestling tournament ever, Mavis Pyorre dominated her division on her way to the gold medal, going unscored on throughout the tournament, including a 19 to 0 technical fall handed out to one opponent.

“I was really proud of all of them,” said Head Coach Steve Fisher. “They all wrestled very well, especially considering the limited number of practices, due to our late start.”
