LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – All branches of the Lake County Library system will be closed July 4 to observe Independence Day.

Normal hours at all branches will resume on July 5.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The popular children’s Nature Education Program at the Lake County Land Trust’s Rodman Preserve will resume on Saturday, June, 21 and be held on the third Saturday of each month through September.

The program is great fun for children ages 7 through 12, or younger if accompanied by a parent.

It is free and open to the public, starting at 9 a.m. and lasting until about noon.

A highlight of this first program will be learning about predators and prey by dissecting owl pellets, a fun activity that children enjoy.

The owl pellets contain the remains of small animals that have been eaten by owls, including bones and skulls.

Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

The preserve is located at 6350 Westlake Road near Upper Lake. Take the Nice-Lucerne Cut-off between Lakeport and Upper Lake.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Habitat for Humanity Lake County announces the planned submittal of a request for funding from the USDA Rural Development Housing Preservation Grant.
 
Funds awarded will be used to assist very low and low income homeowners in repairing and rehabilitating their homes in Lake County.

The goal of Housing Preservation funding is to support the Lake County homeowners who need home repairs in order to preserve a safe and healthy household.

LUCERNE, Calif. – Lucerne Friends of Locally Owned Water – or FLOW – will hold a general meeting on Saturday, June 21.

The group will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, at the corner of 10th and Country Club.

Topics will include information for a feasibility study, the need for a secretary and election results.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – On May 19 and 20, the Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians conducted their second waste tire amnesty event.

More than 1,100 used car and truck tires and twenty four tractor tires were brought in during the two day event, from all around the county and from local tribal lands, including approximately 130 tires from the city of Clearlake.

The event also included a first-ever farm tractor tire collection.

Participants also received a $10 match play for Konocti Vista Casino.

A similar waste tire amnesty event was held by the tribe in October 2013, with more than 650 tires collected from within Lake County, primarily from Lakeport and Kelseyville.

The tribe’s waste tire collection is funded through CalRecycle, part of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

“The tribe is happy to provide support for removal of waste tires throughout the county and the cities of Lakeport and Clearlake,” said Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians Tribal Chairman Anthony Jack. “We know that waste tires can harbor mosquito larvae and could also threaten air and water quality should a tire fire occur.”

Jack added, “Removing almost 2,000 tires during these events has a positive impact for the whole community and the environment.”

Two more events are scheduled within the next year – October 2014 and May 2015 – and will be publicized as dates are set.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – City of Lakeport road crews will be conducting repair work this Wednesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 19.

Lakeport Public Works reported that Third and Fourth streets – from Crawford Street to the end of both streets – will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days while crews perform road repairs.

Only residents on those streets will be allowed into those areas during work hours, the city reported.

Please be aware and keep alert for city workers.
